The first nativity play was made long time ago, in 1223, by the
great lov er of Baby Jesus -
Saint
Frank from Assisi in a rocky grotto
in Greccio. Fathers and brothers from the Order spread this custom all around
the world, also to Poland where
already at the end of 13th century
there appeared figures presenting the whole scene of Christ's
birth. However, there came the time when people were bored with annual
watching of the wooden or stone figures. Then the ingenious order brothers
started to display the first mobile figures, later also puppet ones. Just
those shows started to collect big crowds of people. Unfortunately, people's
reaction about these presentations wasn't worthy of the place in which
they were shown - church, and then nativity plays were taken away from
there. They were displayed in different places (bigger houses, squares
or
streets).
