The
inseparable element of Christmas is a carol. The name
carol appeared long time ago. It comes from word
'calendae'. These carols, especially January or New
Year’s ones, they celebrated very
cheerfully, played, sang, said wishes, gave presents.
The Catholic Church banned old heathen custom of singing
carols though the traditions of singing god songs,
visiting homes, buying presents were kept. In this way
we learned the new word, Latin word 'calendae', which is
a carol.
Carolling
Long time ago visits were started on New Year's Day or
the next day. Nowadays, they last longer as the
population of Poland has increased a lot.
